DOWNLOADING G540B.XML:

I formulated this combination in May of 2009. Since then it has really begun to catch on.

The G540 is great, but we needed to find a N34 motor that it could drive. This is what I have come up with:

12/14/09 This just in: Michael at CNCFusion has agreed to supply the G540 option with proper pulleys in his (S) X3 kits. Just ask for the Crevice Reamer G540 option when you order--no extra cost.

02/11 ALL CNCFUSION X3 kits now come WITH the CR option pulleys. You no longer have to ask for them specially.

"Say, I just wanted to let you know that we now ship the G540 pulley setup with all X3 kits, so there is no need to ask for the CR/G540 option. Could you delete the references to the G540 pulleys from your web site, as we get a TON of emails asking about it, and hopefully they will die down without the reference.

The G540 pulleys work just as well as the 1:1 ratio pulleys when you have powerful stepper drives, so we just standardized with the G540 ratio to simplify things on our end."

 Michael.

I recommend the $969 deluxe kit, but get the $48 optional pair of helical couplers with it. They will provide much less backlash than the standard Lovejoy couplings.

So, if you are about to order an X3 kit, or if your kit has not shipped yet--Ask for this option, it will save you a bunch of money over the G203V electronics.

What this method does, is use a Keling N34 906 oz motor. That detunes @ 3.5A to about 520 oz of torque. The new pulleys will bring that torque up to 640-670 oz. MORE than enough to give very nice 160-200 IPM rapids on the Z.

Keling now offers a 3 axis and 4 axis kit for X3 that includes the 906 and 387 motors. I recommend that you substitute the more efficient 381s for the 387s though.

(S) X3 LOW COST, POWERFUL & RELIABLE ELECTRONICS:

$245 (1) G540 unkillable 4 axis drive. This IS a deluxe, advanced features breakout board also--COMES WITH 4th axis drive
and spindle-speed controller already installed.
$098 (2) Keling KL23H2100-35-4B 381 oz motors for X and Y
$099 (1) Keling KL34H295-43-8A 906 oz N34 motor for Z (Detunes to 520 oz W/G540. Changing Z pulley to 1.23:1 = 640 Oz)
$050 (1) Keling KL-350-48 48V/7.3A PSU. (This will handle 3 motors. 4th axis may need more amps.)
$014 (1) pulley http://sdp-si.com/eStore/PartDetail.asp?Opener=Group&PartID=59152&GroupID=217 (You won't need this pulley if you order a CNCFusion kit.)

The stock Acme screws have adjustable split/nuts to limit backlash. This is a very workable combination for awhile, but you WILL want to upgrade to ball screws.

Unfortunately, the Deluxe kit has different parts than the Stock screw kit, so there IS no upgrade directly to the Deluxe kit. The helical connectors will not fit the stock screws either.
Save up your money, and buy the DELUXE kit, with helical connectors. This will give you premium ball screws, pre-loaded ball nuts and angular contact bearings--And your X3 will have nearly ZERO backlash. After you have installed the deluxe kit, SELL the stock screw kit. It will be as if you only RENTED the stock kit for awhile.

You may also need some other stuff:

You can use THIS wire for motor cables and home/limit switches. Ground the drain wire ONLY at the driver end. (DB9 Pins 2,3,4 for motors, PSU Ground for homes/limits)

It also comes in 100 ft roll.

You won't need any db9 motor connectors with the G540, as they come WITH it. The G540 also has circuitry for simple spindle speed control and outputs for dc relays to turn coolant pump (Or router motor) on or off.

These inexpensive 48V relays are very good for starting and stopping spindle motor, cooling pump, vacuum etc.:

Unless you have the new G540EZ (Which adjusts current limit with trim pots) you will need one of THESE 1/4 Watt 3.48K resistors for each 381 or 387:

3.48KXBK-ND
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?lang=en&site=US&WT.z_homepage_link=hp_go_button&KeyWords=3.48KXBK-ND&x=15&y=19

They only come in a pack of five, so about $1 for 10. With shipping it's about $3.50

While you are ordering from Digikey, might as well also get some spare F2318-ND G540 fuses:

Or, in Canada:

You will also need an estop switch, Home/limit switches and a 6 foot "straight thru parallel port cable. These are all available from Keling:

http://kelinginc.net/CNCPackage.html

The G540 is so small that many are mounting theirs INSIDE the computer case.

Camtronics has a case MADE for the G540:

Keling sells a controller box with G540 already installed:
