X3/SX3 SMALL MILL

VERTICAL MACHINING CENTER
MY GOALS FOR THIS PROJECT ARE MANY:

1)  All CNC components, including (S) X3, Electronics and Computer must fit onto the same machining stand.
2)  All sides and parts of the machine must be quickly accessable, including the UNDERSIDE.
3)  Leakproof flood cooling and enclosure must be built-in.
4)  There must be on-board storage for what this particular station needs
5)  The VMC must be movable.
6)  There will be a rigidity-increasing Column Brace built-in.
7)  There will be a Head Counterbalance Built-in, which will also double as a crane for head removal/installation.
8)  The VMC will have its own AC power distribution system.
9)  There will be a convenient method of chip collection.

PART ONE. BASIC FRAMEWORK:

The framework consists of 1 1/2 inch steel angle iron bolted together. I chose bolts rather than welding so I could easily move the VMC to another location if necessary. The larger base can be removed to make 2 pieces, but I could also unbolt the whole
thing and move it in pieces.

If you know you will never have to move it through a 36 inch door, then you could weld yours up.

UNDERFRAME AND WHEEL TRUCKS

The Underframe looks like a big H. Notice that some members are doubled:

The outriggers are Wheel Trucks. There are four of these wheels mounted under each Truck.

OVERFRAME:

The tool chest has wood stringers installed for its mounting to the UnderFrame.

It is bolted through its bottom and through the Underframe rails.

The tool chest becomes an integral part and serves to square up the front of the overframe. To this
end, a mounting block is bolted to its top.

And the lower front cross member is leveled, squared and bolted to it.

After all of the top rails are added, (Note the doubled mill mount rail) some foam insulation builds
up the tool chest top surface to help support the coolant tub:

The coolant tub is installed:

And fitted so one end is much lower than the other.

And the mill base is mounted: Notice that entire underneath of mill is accessible.
