The X2 is a reasonably competent small benchtop. It has two main shortcomings: 1) Plastic spindle gears tend to break. Should install belt conversion. 2) Tilting column is not needed, hinders rigidity and cramps Y axis travel. Nevertheless, these mills are doing real work out there and many have been converted to CNC with plethora of available plans/kits.

LOWEST COST WAY TO BUY A NEW X2:

1. Cut the 20% off coupon from Popular Mechanics or Home Shop Machinist magazine.
2. Order the X2, using coupon, from local Harbor Freight.
3. Save on shipping by having it delivered free to store and picking it up there:

Total cost for R8 HF X2: $391 + sales tax, AS OF 12/01/09 The coupon also applies to sale price, so it COULD cost even less. It MIGHT be worth paying more for the vastly superior SX2 though.
The Grizzly costs more, and is higher quality, but has the less desirable (For USA) MT3 spindle, and so does the Micro Mark

While I usually recommend Grizzly for their higher quality, better warranty, and great customer support with most parts in stock, In this case my nod goes to Harbor Freight for the R8 spindle. The new MicroMark #84630 SX2 also has the R8 spindle.

SX2
These mills are all produced by Sieg in China. Sieg has just released a new and very desirable X2 model with a powerful  BLDC motor and belt drive. When available, a substantial improvement.

THIS IS THE ONE TO GET!!!!!

For the total beginner:

The mill comes with a drill chuck. (Except LMS SX3) You will need a vise. This one is a good starter vise:

And for a little more, a slightly better one:
http://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=1647&category=
You could easily spend thousands on a good vise.

You will need some end mill holders. I recommend you start with a simple TTS set of 1 plus the collet, and add more as necessary:

http://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=2454&category=
These work with both R8 or MT3 spindle--Just get the right 3/4 inch collet.

And some same shank end mills:

You will also need measuring equipment, a dial gauge etc. Much of this is available at Harbor freight to get you started.
